In the Mild Season of Peace

------ United Diversity --------------- Diverse Unity ------- From divisions of Black and White to Red and Blue, we are a divided country and world. Yet, we are all here together. So how do we co-exist? Is the person we disagree with an enemy to defeat or a fellow citizen who we seek to understand and from whom we seek understanding? And, do our differences in political opinion and life experience make us strong in our diversity or weak in our lack of a common purpose?

In The Mild Season of Peace

“In the mild season of peace, with minds unoccupied by other subjects, they passed many months in cool, uninterrupted, and daily consultation; and finally, without having been awed by power, or influenced by any passions except love for their country, they presented and recommended to the people the plan produced by their joint and very unanimous councils. “  (John Jay, 1787)

This is an excerpt from (The Federalist (Number 2), published on October 31, 1787. The writer, John Jay, wonderfully describes the nature of the work and motivation of the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention, held from May 25 to September 17, 1787.  In only a few months this group imagined and defined the United States Constitution, the framework for the world’s greatest government.

How far have we fallen in 222 years from this high point in our nation’s history? Is it possible for this generation to rise to the level of those who came before us?  Or has hatred and ignorance blinded us to the point that we see our only satisfaction in savaging those who disagree with us?  I think it is time for reasonable voices to speak up.  It’s also time for shouters to sit quietly and listen for a change.  No more whining that all is lost. It is lost only if the responsible among us choose to give up.

In the Mild Season of Peace is devoted to rational discussion and debate.  Not just ranting and “red meat.”  I don’t expect us to agree on everything, but I hope we can have a productive conversation and robust debate.  There is a path out of this quagmire, but I’m not sure we’ve found it yet.  I look forward to us discerning it together.

Peace & Progress,

Dear Mild – if that is really your name- whose picture did you steal to put on this website. I know your type. You’re trying to lure in some well meaning, respectable person who just wants to get along like me and Rodney King just so you can whip up on us. We know you are a rabble rouser just trying to stir up things. At any rate, Merry Christmas in the name of the Prince of Peace whose Body was bloodied in the ultimate peace bringing effort. MM.

      Hello Mickey,

I had a watch with your likeness on it a few decades ago. I wonder what happened to that watch? Maybe I lost it in a legal dispute with my first wife. I’m just not sure…

      Merry Christmas,

      CRB
